MOUNT KENYA
Mount Kenya is an extinct glacier covered volcano straddling the equator. At 17,057 feet, it is the second highest mountain in Africa behind Kilimanjaro. Your hike will begin in the bamboo and hygenia forest at about 8,000 feet; home to an abundance of wildlife that includes elephants, buffalo, zebra, giant forest hogs and lions. You’ll ascend through areas of giant heath, senecios and tussock grasses. Point Lenana at 16,355 feet is the destination of most visitors to the mountain. It is the third highest peak and can be by anyone in good physical condition without any technical training or equipment. We recommend a minimum of five days to acclimate to the elevation, though it can be climbed in fewer days. There are also many other peaks on Mount Kenya that can be climbed with varying degrees difficulty.
The two main peaks of Batian and Nelion at 17,057 feet and 17,021 feet respectively are technical climbs. If interested, please contact us for more details.
