GAME VIEWING

BEST OF KENYA’S SAFARI DESTINATIONS

Kenya offers some of the best wildlife viewing locations in the world. These include popular destinations like the Maasai Mara National Reserve, Amboseli National Park and Lake Nakuru National Park as well as many lesser-visited parks. Northwest Expeditions gives you the option of staying in game lodges, tented campsites or a combination of the two. If there are particular animals that you are most interested in, we will recommend areas where you will have the best chance of seeing them. Though there are no guarantees. These are wild animals and have their own schedules. If you are interested in birding, we can arrange for a bird expert to join us.

MAASAI MARA NATIONAL RESERVE

The Maasai Mara is the northern part of the Serengeti ecosystem. It is considered to be Kenya’s best wildlife sanctuary, where plains animals can still be seen in the great numbers once common throughout East Africa, which in turn support a large population of predators. The landscape of the Mara is one of gently rolling savanna grasslands interacted by dark green veins of acacia woodland along the banks of the Mara and Talek rivers. The Maasai Mara is best known for its part in one of the natural wonders of the world, the 500-mile yearly migration of one and a quarter million wildebeests with the dramatic river crossings. They are usually here from August into October. In addition to the migrating herds, there is also a population of resident wildebeest along with many other plains animals including cape buffalo, hartebeest, topi, impala, zebra and gazelles. Elephants and Maasai giraffe are common. If you’re lucky you might see a leopard or black rhino. The Mara has Kenya’s largest population of lions with prides numbering over 20 individuals. The open country is also ideal for cheetahs, hyenas, hunting dogs and jackals. Here we set up a temporary tented camp in a secluded wooded area along the banks of the Mara River in the northern part of the reserve. This is one of our favorite places and popular with clients. Groups of hippos and huge crocodiles can be seen from the camp. We will have two or three Maasai askari (guards) in camp to ensure you’re safe if you need to get out of your tent at night. We will visit a Maasai boma and learn about their day to day lives and culture. Because of the remoteness of this area, we spend at least three nights here. An option for the last day is a daylong game drive in a southeasterly direction, ending at the world famous Keekorok Lodge where we can spend a night or two.

AMBOSELI NATIONAL PARK

Amboseli National Park offers one of the most iconic scenes in all of Africa with 19,340 foot Kilimanjaro as the backdrop. Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest mountain and the world highest free-standing mountain, reaching 16,000 feet above the plains. Depending on the time of year, it may be hidden by clouds much of the day. Usually, it is visible at dawn. Wildlife is abundant around the two central swamps. There are large numbers of cape buffalo, zebra, Maasai giraffe, impala and gazelles, all of which support a population of lions and hyenas. Amboseli is most known for its elephants made famous through many films and the research of Cynthia Moss and Joyce Poole. Due to the popularity of the park, with many tourists and the presence of the Maasai, who are intolerant of intruders, the elephants here have not been subjected to the same levels of poaching as other areas. Because of this, it is one of the last places to see old bull elephants with large tusks. Some even attaining a level of celebrity status. Here, we usually camp at the KWS public camp site. There are plenty of options for those not wanting to camp like Serena and Ol Tukai Lodges.

LAKE NAKURU NATIONAL PARK

Lake Nakuru is a bird paradise located in the central part of Kenya on the floor of the great rift valley. An estimated 450 species of birds can be seen here. Lake Nakuru is a soda lake most noted for its large number of flamingos, sometimes numbering over a million. In the last decade their numbers have fallen due to the rising water level of the lake, reducing the amount of their food, forcing them to move to other lakes. This national park consists of steep rocky escarpments, dense forests as well as grasslands which provide habitat for many different wildlife speciesSome of the animals which can be seen include white rhinos, black rhinos, Rothschild giraffes, lions, cape buffalos, waterbucks, zebras and leopards. We often camp at Makalia Falls Camp.

HELL'S GATE NATIONAL PARK

Hell’s Gate is a large gorge that was once the outlet of a lake system which once filled the Rift Valley floor following the last ice age. The main gorge is surrounded by 600-foot cliffs the provide nesting sites for many large birds including Griffon vultures, Hooded vultures and Verreaux eagles. Visitors are allowed to walk and ride bikes in the park. Buffalos, Rothschild’s giraffes, zebras, hartebeests, warthogs and gazelles inhabit the gorge. At the south end of the main gorge is a footpath that leads to the Lower Gorge. Here visitors will find hot springs, jet streams and fumaroles. Unique plants capable of withstanding high temperatures grow around the fumaroles and the smell of sulfur pervades the air. We often will do a day hike here when staying on the shore of Lake Naivasha.

LAKE NAIVASHA

Lake Naivasha is the second largest freshwater lake in Kenya at about 55 square miles and one of only two freshwater lakes in the Great Rift Valley. This a great place to relax part way through a safari. We tent near the shore under yellow fever acacia trees. You will have the option to go on a short boat ride, hugging the shore where you will hippos, and many water birds with Mount Longonot in the background. You are likely to see many fish eating birds such as fish eagles, pied kingfishers, goliath herons and both long-tailed and great cormorants. As the sun goes down you can watch the hippos come out of the lake to graze. We will often camp here and spend part of the day hiking at Hell’s Gate which is a short drive away.

OL PAJETA CONSERVANCY

Ol Pejeta Conservancy sits on the equator west of the town of Nanyuki, between Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Mountains. It has most of the big game as many of the other parks and reserves as well as reticulated giraffes and Grevy’s zebra. It has a large number of southern white rhinos and East Africa’s largest population of black rhinos with about 100 individuals. It also is home to the world’s last two northern white rhinos. These two females are kept in their own encloser where they are closely guarded. An extra fee is charged to see them, and an appointment must be made in advance. Ol Pejeta is the only place in Kenya where chimpanzees can be seen at the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary. It provides a haven for orphaned, abandoned and chimps rescued from the exotic pet trade.

Ol Pejeta also operates a successful livestock program, which serves to benefit local pastoralists and wildlife. Through the conservancy’s community development programme, Ol Pejeta provides funding to surrounding communities to aid health, education, water and infrastructure projects. They also support the provision of agriculture and livestock extension services and the development of community-based conservation tourism ventures.

LAKE BOGORIA NATIONAL RESERVE

Lake Bogoria National Reserve lies to the west of the 2,000-foot Ngendelel Escarpment in the Great Rift Valley. The lake is alkaline, feeding blue-green algae which in turn feed flamingoes. At times the flamingoes can number more than a million individuals. In addition to the flamingoes, there are many other bird species including pratincole, little bee-eater, yellow-billed stork, African spoonbill, augur buzzard, gabar goshawk, tawny eagle, sacred ibis and ostrich.

The lake is geothermically active with many geysers. There are also several hot springs along the shore that visitors can bathe in. Walking is also allowed here. Lake Bogoria is not heavily visited so you are not likely to see many other tourists. We can camp along the southern shore in the acacia-ficus woodland or stay at one of the lodges. Mammals include Greater Kudu as well as buffalo, zebra, cheetah, baboon, warthog, caracal, spotted hyena, impala and dik dik.

ABERDARE NATIONAL PARK

Aberdare National Park is located east of the Rift Valley. It has a variety of ecological zones ranging from rainforests at lower elevations through bamboo forests to the moorlands of the higher regions with peaks reaching over 13,000 feet. The park is known for its many impressive waterfalls including Karuru Waterfall with a height of nearly 900 feet, the highest waterfall in Kenya.

Many of the usual wildlife species can be found here such as elephants, giraffes, buffalos, lions and leopards. But also, less familiar forest animals including giant forest hogs, bushbucks, red duikers and bongos. In addition to game viewing the Aberdare Mountains are a great place for hiking and camping. The moorlands offer spectacular views and a rugged landscape with many volcanic rock formations. In addition to camping, another popular lodging option is Rhino Retreat Guest House. This is a small cabin with four bedrooms. Here, you can relax on the porch while gazing out at Mount Kenya in the distance and watching animals visiting the saltlick and small water hole just a few yards away.
